What Is Facet Joint Syndrome?

Facet joint syndrome can cause sharp, localized spine pain. Learn what it is and how chiropractic care provides lasting relief.

Facet joints are small stabilizing joints located at the back of each vertebra. When they become inflamed or irritated — often due to arthritis, injury, or poor posture — they can cause significant, sharp pain during motion.

Facet joint syndrome is commonly misdiagnosed or mistaken for disc problems. However, its pain pattern is usually localized and worsens with certain movements like twisting, bending, or standing.

Chiropractic care focuses on restoring mobility and reducing inflammation in the affected joints. At our clinic, we use precise spinal adjustments, soft tissue therapy, and exercise programs to help relieve facet joint stress and improve function.

Symptoms:

  • Localized back or neck pain
  • Pain worsens with extension, twisting, or standing
  • Tenderness over spinal joints
  • Stiffness in the morning or after activity
  • Occasional referred pain (but not radiating like a disc)

Treatments:

  • Targeted spinal adjustments for joint mobility
  • Soft tissue release and myofascial therapy
  • Core stabilization exercises
  • Movement pattern correction
  • Supportive lifestyle advice (sleep, activity, posture)
