What Does It Mean When You Hear Clicking or Popping in Your Neck?

Occasional neck popping can be normal, but persistent clicking may indicate joint or alignment issues. Learn when to see a chiropractor.

Hearing a pop or click in your neck might be harmless — or it might indicate that a joint is moving improperly. Known as crepitus, these sounds can come from gas release in the joints or movement of ligaments over bony surfaces.

While occasional noise is normal, popping that’s painful, persistent, or accompanied by stiffness may signal joint dysfunction, ligament laxity, or muscular imbalance. In these cases, chiropractic care can help restore proper joint movement and relieve associated symptoms.

At State College Family Chiropractic Center, we assess joint mechanics, posture, and muscle tone to determine if intervention is needed. Adjustments can realign the cervical spine, reduce strain, and minimize recurring noises associated with dysfunction.
