Shoulder Pain: Posture or Something More?

Persistent shoulder pain might be more than poor posture. Learn how to identify deeper joint or nerve issues and how chiropractic care can help.

Shoulder pain is often chalked up to poor posture or overuse — but in many cases, the true cause goes deeper. Underlying joint dysfunction, muscular imbalance, or nerve irritation may all contribute. At State College Family Chiropractic Center, we take a whole-body approach to shoulder pain, starting with a comprehensive assessment of spinal alignment, scapular mechanics, and shoulder joint function.

When posture is the culprit, it typically involves forward head position, rounded shoulders, and upper back stiffness. These patterns lead to muscle strain and reduced joint mobility. However, shoulder pain can also be rooted in rotator cuff dysfunction, bursitis, labral irritation, or even nerve compression stemming from the cervical spine.

Through chiropractic adjustments, soft tissue therapy, postural correction, and rehabilitative exercises, we help patients regain mobility, reduce inflammation, and prevent future flare-ups. If your shoulder pain is nagging, worsening, or affecting your sleep and daily movement, it may be time to look beyond posture and get to the root of the issue.

Symptoms:

  • Pain when reaching overhead or behind
  • Dull ache or sharp pain near the shoulder joint
  • Stiffness and reduced range of motion
  • Clicking, popping, or grinding with movement
  • Pain that worsens with poor posture or repetitive activity
  • Radiating discomfort into the arm or upper back

Treatments:

  • Chiropractic adjustments to the upper back, neck, and shoulder girdle
  • Myofascial release and soft tissue work targeting the rotator cuff and scapular stabilizers
  • Postural retraining and ergonomic education
  • Rehabilitative exercises to strengthen shoulder and scapular muscles
  • Cervical decompression if nerve involvement is suspected
