Chiropractic vs. Physical Therapy: What’s the Difference?

Chiropractors and physical therapists both help you move and feel better—but their focus and techniques differ. Learn when to choose which.

Chiropractic and physical therapy (PT) are both non-invasive approaches to musculoskeletal health—but they serve different roles.

Chiropractors focus on spinal alignment, nervous system function, and restoring joint mobility through precise adjustments. They address the root cause of many symptoms, especially those related to nerve irritation or postural dysfunction.

Physical therapists emphasize movement retraining, strength building, and rehabilitating injuries after surgery or trauma. They often work on specific exercises to improve flexibility, stability, and coordination.

At State College Family Chiropractic Center, we frequently collaborate with physical therapists for patients who need both structural correction and muscle retraining. It’s not about either/or—it’s about what you need, when you need it.

Symptoms:

  • Sciatica or disc issues (Chiropractic)
  • Post-surgical rehab (PT)
  • Chronic pain with movement dysfunction (Both)
  • Joint stiffness or poor alignment (Chiropractic)
  • Muscle weakness after injury (PT)

Treatments:

  • Chiropractic: spinal adjustments, posture correction
  • PT: guided exercise programs, mobility work
  • Shared care plan if dual therapy is appropriate
  • Patient education on recovery path
